Brand New Release First Track Off “Daisy”

athebottomnoborderplaybutton

Some gripe that a lot of the songs off the forthcoming album Daisy weren’t written by Jesse Lacey, but by the band’s newcomer guitarist Vincent Accardi, but we think it adds a lot of dimension to the band. Speaking of adding more dimension, check out the layered vocals in the new track “At The Bottom”. The guitars may be reminiscent of The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me, but as far as we are concerned, this is a whole new chapter for Brand New, and we like it!

Daisy comes out September 22nd, and the band have released some tour dates that they will be doing to support the album.

Listen to “At The Bottom” on YouTube, and then go buy the album when it comes out!

Guitar Hero 5 Won’t Disappoint Music Fans

Guitar-Hero-5noborderplaybutton

Guitar Hero 5 has a U.S. release of September 1st, but we can’t wait until then to talk about the exciting track list of this game. Guitar Hero has always prided itself on offering an eclectic mix of rock, alternative, punk, metal, and indie titles, but this new version has clearly outdone itself. We first learned that Elton John and The White Stripes were on board during the gaming conference E3, last month.  Since then, we’ve been biting our nails with anxiety to see who else was going to allow us to rock out to their song in the best vicarious way possible. Tom Petty’s “American Girl” is a nice touch; Catering to the Silence of the Lambs buff in all of us. Modern artists like Attack! Attack! and Kings of Leon will draw a younger audience, whereas classic artists like Bon Jovi and KISS will keep Gen X’ers happy. For the hipster-connoisseur, bands like Kaiser Chiefs and Sunny Day Real Estate appear, but are offering some of their lesser-known tracks. We feel like this adds a lot of dimension to the game, and will keep players on their toes. The game is a little more intricate this time around too; When you sing “Fame” by David Bowie, you are required to get the repeated last line of the song correct as it moves down in pitch. David Bowie and Queen’s “Under Pressure” was always a song that the game’s developers wanted to get their hands on, and that track finally appears in GH5. Also, the game features some tracks that we felt were a surprise, such as “Feel Good, Inc.” by Gorillaz and a Zakk Wylde collaboration with Public Enemy. Overall, the we feel as though the game will surpass the other GH titles by far, and we can’t wait to play against Shirley Manson as a boss.

Matt and Kim: Ain’t Life ‘GRAND’?

Matt_and_Kim-imagenoborderplaybuttonAdmittedly, we didn’t dig up this band from the obscurities of the internet, but we heard on a BACARDI commercial, and hey, that’s okay too! The infectious keyboards of “Daylight” have had our feet stomping for nearly a week straight, and having heard very little else from the band, we decided to go ahead with this story (and otherwise proclamation of our love)  for Matt and Kim anyway. With a  likeness to Piebald, Matt and Kim seem to pick up where they left off, satiating our need for an energetic presence in indie-music. Watching FUSE late at night, we managed to catch the video for “Daylight” which features the pair playing in very awkward places, such as a shower and in a refrigerator. The sprightly video even matches the song’s carefree lyrics (the chorus talks about hitch-hiking to Maine and “anywhere” feeling like home).  Home, however, is New York for this two-some, and it shows; In the urban setting of the “Daylight” video and Times Square in their “Lesson Learned” video. One can’t help but notice how elated this pair are, and how much they smile in their videos. It’s a simple concept, but if it’s so noticeable, does that mean it’s THAT lacking in other videos? Their superfluous moods are just part of what makes this band so great.  Their album Grand was released in January of this year, and has been gaining momentum every since.  Their song “Good Ol’ Fashioned Nightmare” will be featured in a promo for a new NBC show. In a video interview, Matt and Kim stated that they just want people to have fun listening to their music, and we can’t speak for everyone, but we know about a few who are having a blast! So get this record, put it up to eleven, and start a dance party.

S.C.U.M. & the revival of doom music in London

24ep7qs

East Londoners S.C.U.M . (named for a book by Valerie Solanas about a society for cutting up men) are inadvertently riding the new doom wave that is hitting England. Emerging at the perfect time to do so, the band has been playing at Underage Festival and is featured in the August 2009 issue of Nylon magazine, along with likened artists HTRK, Pocahaunted, and An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump. S.C.UM. are currently recording a project called SIGNALS, in which they create music in different parts of the word using found objects and instruments to emit a feel of where they are in the world. You can go here and listen to “Warsaw” or visit their myspace to listen to other tracks. Youtubers have already coined this band a “new Bauhaus” and they aren’t wrong. This looks like just the beginning too; it doesn’t seem like this new trend of darkwave goth is going anywhere.

The Fashion: Denmark’s Hidden Gem

Fashion07

noborderplaybuttonThe Fashion have been around since 2002, and haven’t really released anything since 2007, but a couple of months ago, Radiofluxx overturned a rock, and there was one of  Copenhagen’s musical gems: The Fashion. We at this site do admit our pension for European pop music, but The Fashion aren’t run-of-the-mill. With their catchier-than-most lyrics and fun videos, they rank high in our book. It was the creative video for “Solo Impala (Take The Money & Run)” that won our hearts in the first place. The video features singer Jakob Printzlau looking pretty guilty of kidnapping the band’s drummer. The band’s other single, “Like Knives” is equally as great, with the catchy line, “Go get your guns and your switchblade knives and cut it up”. The video is reminiscent of Bob Dylan’s “Subterranean Homesick Blues”, but add a modern twist and everyday people. It is unfortunate that this band seems to be lacking Stateside, and therefore, has not toured here much. However, they receive extensive radio play in their home country, and according to their myspace, they are currently writing a new album. We hope we have nothing but great things to say about that too!

The Cribs: New Album & Latest To Offer Free Music

cribs_headernoborderplaybuttonEnglish-based indie group, The Cribs have announced a follow-up record to 2007’s Men’s Needs, Women’s Needs, Whatever entitled Ignore The Ignorant. This will be the first album that ex-Smith Johnny Marr will play guitar on with the rest of the band. The album will be released September 7th 2009, shortly after the release of the first single, “Cheat On Me”.  The album, we anticipate, will be their best release yet, as it is being produced by Nick Launay who has an extremely impressive resume under his belt (Talking Heads, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Nick Cave, INXS, Lou Reed, The Birthday Party, Supergrass, etc.). The Cribs are following bands like XO Skeletons in offering fans free MP3 downloads. You can go to The Cribs’ official site now and download the song “We Were Aborted” off the new album by signing up for their mailing list. The rock-driven track is a touch darker than some of their previous stuff, but Marr’s guitar work is definitely prevalent, which doesn’t fail to disappoint us. Check the site for 20+ European dates stretching from September to November. Since there has been no word of an American tour for this album…yet…the free download will have to pacify us in the meantime.

Modest Mouse & Heath Ledger?

modestmousenoborderplaybutton August 4th of this year will see the release of Modest Mouse’s long-awaited B-Sides album, No One’s First, and You’re Next, which features unreleased tracks from Good News For People Who Love Bad News (2004) and We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank (2007). Most surprising (and random) of all, however, is that one of the tracks off the album (“King Rat”) already has a video made for it, and it was directed by now-deceased actor Heath Ledger.  Ledger owned a production company, and wanted to climb on board for the project, alongside Terry Gilliam (12 Moneys, Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas) who did the animation for the video. It is rumored that the public will get to cast their eyes on this video later this year. Check back here at Radio Fluxx for updates.

Get Ready For Cold Cave

coldcaveposternoborderplaybuttonWe are excited to finally celebrate the arrival of the first LP from Philly’s Cold Cave on July 14th, which includes Caralee McElroy of Xiu Xiu fame, and underground renaissance man of sorts, Wes Eisold (Some Girls, XO Skeletons, Heartworm). You can visit Heartworm to pre-order Cold Cave’s new LP Love Comes Close which will bring you to the brink of madness as you try to figure out if it sounds like it’s more from the past, or more from the future, with it’s 80’s sound and spacy, futuristic vocals. “The Trees Grew Emotions & Died”, which seems to be the instant favorite, features a really catchy keyboard loop, and a minimalistic sound that satiates us right down to our synth-loving cores. Heartworm is a mixed media site that puts out records, books, and other offerings from the underworld, and we’ve always felt a special kinship toward them for a number of reasons, but mostly because like us, they are very iconoclastic of what mainstream represents.

The Low End Of Low: Marilyn Manson Collaborates With Lady GaGa

mm_lggnoborderplaybuttonFriday, June 12th, 2009 – Yesterday, perezhilton.com broke out the world premiere of Lady GaGa’s remix “Love Game” featuring vocals by Marilyn Manson. We knew one thing for sure: this can not possibly be good, but we had to investigate anyway. Our suspicions were confirmed when we realized we cannot unhear what was just heard. It is awful…just plain…awful. We don’t know what Manson was thinking. It is speculated that there might be something romantic going on. This seems like the only relatively logical explanation for this crime against music. We normally don’t adhere to the gossip of what is going on in musicians’ personal lives, but when it’s this bad, we feel as though we must interject…Maybe he’s befriended her in order to do us all a favor and put an end to her horrendous music-making. Or maybe this is his ridiculous attempt at collaborating with an up-and-coming artist a la Puff Daddy. This collaboration comes to us not even a month after Manson released The High End Of Low, to which we gave staggeringly high reviews. Manson is always poking fun at America and corporate reign, money, and to quote him directly, Americans turning “literature into litter”…so what gives? Has he become a comfortable statistic, or did he just want to see her poker face? Either way, Lady GaGa is a manufactured piece of crap “artist”, and if she thinks repeating “this beat is sick” over and over equals a song, she has another thing coming.

You have been warned: Perez Hilton’s article/hear the song
